fashion forward

"Fashion is instant language."
Miuccia Prada

It can be magnificent, flamboyant art. It can also be a big pretentious wank... but there is an intractable little girl  in me who will always love playing dress-ups. And - as you know - the best kind of fashion is the kind that fulfills the desire to make myriad fantasies tangible.

Here are two of my all-time favourite jewelers.
They also happen to be gorgeous friends of mine and are talented, AMAZING chicks.
Their jewelry designs are unique and simply superb.
See for yourselves.

The first is Zara Simon - her designs have that wonderful chunky gold, byzantine feel about them, reminiscent of ancient, and decidedly royal worlds. They are designed with precious and semi precious stones handpicked by Zara and set in Vermeil. I especially love her use of bold coloured stones.
She's not timid in her creativity, and I like that.
Her jewels are for the girl who is a sophisticated jet-setter who has a soft spot for history and Egypt and luxury.

Her latest Metropolis collection has a more edgy metropolitan feel and mixes cool city-scapes with Egyptian imagery. It is a stunning collection of rings emulating cities around the world. Made in 9ct and 18ct gold, set delicately with rubies, sapphires and diamonds.

Here are some examples of her work.

Firstly these amazing rings:

And the coolest piece of all is this ring which can be worn as a double ring or single (half bite):

The second collection is jewelry by Prithvi Alamkara.

These are gorgeous, delicate and quirky pieces that are thoroughly unique and eye catching in design. Each piece is handcrafted and no piece is like another.

Again the defining characteristic is the use of raw, byzantine gold and you feel like you have just raided an archaeological treasure trove from the palaces of ancient Crete!
Exactly the look I try to cultivate, personally.
Exotic, mysterious and magnetising in that "I'm a sexy anthropologist who has spent a lot of time in the east studying tantra" kind of way.

Their earrings are very special - I love the exquisite golden bird motive!

Dolce & Gabbana's recent contributions to the world of fashion have been mesmerising.
I totally get into that medieval thing -  A rich, lush world of baroque royalty, embellished by gold and silver and blood red passion.
It's all about transporting yourself to a romantic castle full of velvets and tapestries, knights in shining armour and beautiful damsels, and endless decadent banquets and ceremonies.
Ready, set, go!

If you like the style but don't have the budget for Dolce & Gabbana (I mean seriously who does!), here are some similar super cheap finds in the same baroque style:

And even for the boys too:

I don't know whether you could classify steampunk as fashion... it's kind of a lifestyle choice to live in a fantasy world.
But that suits me just fine.
I actually think all fashion should enable that!
